Carmel, California. 1939. Years after being declared legally dead, the still-dashing Jim Masters (Claude Rains) returns to his now-engaged wife, Nancy Masters (Fay Bainter), their four daughters and her fiancé, Gabriel Lopez (John Garfield). Marry the reliable Gabriel or return to handsome ne'er-do-well Jim? Nancy's dilemma is resolved when Jim realizes that one of his daughters is about to marry a man too much like him.
